Inclusion

What do we mean by Inclusion and why is it important?

Incorporating diverse stakeholders and ways of thinking. This includes early and meaningful consultation.

Getting started with Inclusion

Start by sitting down and working through the self-reflection questions below. Certain questions may require further exploration. This may be in the sense of linking in with other dimensions (see below) or through the use of tools and processes to address any issues that the reflection has surfaced.

Potential questions to ask

  • Who is participating in the project and why?
  • How and when will they participate?
  • Who is not participating but perhaps should?
  • Who would not want this science to be done? Why not?
  • Are diverse values and voices included in the research design or delivery?

How these questions can be addressed

  • Establish diverse stakeholder participation from the outset
  • Elicit meaningful contributions and partnerships
  • Allow product and process changes to occur in response to these contributions
  • Retain a receptive attitude to feedback

Further aspects to consider are presented below.

Linking into different dimensions and next steps

Each dimension is not a separate area to work through as a tick-box process. Instead, they should all flow into each other. Working through each of the dimension's self-reflection questions will help you think about the connections you may have missed.

An example of linking inclusion into a different dimension.

As you consider who to include in your project, this may raise questions related to whose voice is and is not being heard, bringing you to consider aspects of social equity and justice. Additionally, including stakeholders and partners in the project will mean that you need to consider different perspectives and timeframes, and require responsiveness and adaption in your project planning.
